Behind The Song
Saturday Mornings
Friday night, I'd set no alarm
Didn't have a thing to do
No school bell ringing in the morning
No homework to get through
I'd wake up with the sun coming in
Through the curtains by my bed
And remember what day it was
With a smile across my face
Eight o'clock, the cartoons started
I'd be sitting on the floor
With a bowl of cereal and cold milk
And my eyes glued to the show
Road Runner flying down the highway
Wile E. chasing him again
I'd laugh so hard I'd spill my breakfast
Then watch him try again
Oh, those Saturday mornings
Not a worry on my mind
A bowl of cereal, my pajamas
And all the time in the world was mine
No schoolbooks, no responsibilities
No place I had to be
Just a little boy in front of the TV
As happy as a boy could be
Oh, those Saturday mornings I'd give anything to see
One more eight o'clock cartoon
With the kid I used to be
Mama'd holler from the kitchen
"Don't you sit there all day long!"
I'd say, "Just one more cartoon, Mama"
Knowing she'd be back before too long
By nine o'clock, I'd hit the shower
Find some clothes and comb my hair
By ten, my bicycle was waiting
And my friends were everywhere
We'd meet up down at the corner
And decide what we would do
Maybe head down to the creek bed
Or find somewhere we'd never been to
Nobody had a written schedule
Nobody needed any plans
Just a couple dollars in our pockets
And a Saturday in our hands
Oh, those Saturday mornings
Not a worry on my mind
A bowl of cereal, my pajamas
And all the time in the world was mine
No schoolbooks, no responsibilities
No place I had to be Just a little boy in front of the TV
As happy as a boy could be
Oh, those Saturday mornings
I'd give anything to see
One more eight o'clock cartoon
With the kid I used to be
Now I wake up on a Saturday And the world don't feel the same
There's bills to pay and things to fix
And a hundred things that need my name
But sometimes when the house is quiet
And the morning sun comes through
I can almost hear that Road Runner
And see that old TV
And for a moment, I'm that little boy
With nothing on his mind
Except what cereal Mama bought
And whether I'd get outside on time
Oh, those Saturday mornings
When the world was standing still
And a cartoon and a bowl of cereal
Were enough to make life feel fulfilled
Mama was still in the kitchen
Daddy hadn't left for work
And I was sitting in my pajamas
With my bare feet on the floor
Oh, those Saturday mornings
If I could have just one more
I'd sit right down beside that little boy
And watch cartoons till half past four
But he'd be out the door by ten
With his bicycle and friends
And I'd be sitting there remembering
Those Saturday mornings again.
