Behind The Song
Eight-Track Times
Daddy's car had an AM radio
But my buddy had a Mustang with a deck
An eight-track player built into the dashboard
And I ain't seen nothing cooler yet
He had a leather case of cartridges
Sitting right there on the floor
We'd flip through every one of them
Before we even shut the door
Then I finally got my own old Chevy
Put an eight-track underneath the dash
Saved up every dollar from my paycheck
Till I had enough to pay in cash
I bought a case with twenty pockets
Filled it up with all my favorite songs
And suddenly that beat-up Chevy
Was the place where we belonged
Oh, those eight-track times
With the windows rolled down low
A little music in the dashboard
And nowhere we had to go
A girl beside me singing
Every word of every line
We thought that road would last forever
Back in those eight-track times
You'd push that cartridge in the player
Hear it click and come alive
And if you didn't like the song that started
You'd hit that button on the side
Sometimes right in the middle of a good one
You'd hear that clunk and lose the beat
Then the music started playing
And we'd laugh there in our seats
We never had to turn those tapes over
They just kept on going round
We'd park beneath the water tower
And let our favorite songs play out
She'd pull her feet up on the dashboard
I'd reach across and take her hand
And that same old song would find us
Falling in love all over again
Oh, those eight-track times
With the windows rolled down low
A little music in the dashboard
And nowhere we had to go
A girl beside me singing
Every word of every line
We thought that road would last forever
Back in those eight-track times
Sometimes the tape would get all tangled
And we'd pull it out real slow
Wind it back around the cartridge
Praying it would still play when we'd go
We'd stick a matchbook underneath it
When the sound got out of line
And somehow all that little trouble
Made the music feel like mine
There weren't a thousand songs to choose from
Just the ones that we could buy
But every one held a memory
Of a place, a girl, a time
Oh, those eight-track times
I can hear that player click
See her reaching for the music
With her lipstick on her lips
That leather case between us
And the highway passing by
We didn't know we were making memories
We were just enjoying life
Oh, those eight-track times
They still come back now and then
And if I could turn that key once more
I'd play them all again
Found an old eight-track in a cardboard box
With her name written on the side
The label's faded, corners worn
But I remember every ride
I'd give a lot to hear that clicking
And have her sitting next to mine
Just one more drive
One more song
One more night
In those eight-track times.
