Behind The Song
Drive-In Kiss
Friday night, I washed that old Chevy
Put a little shine on the hood
Picked her up at seven-thirty
And told her she was looking good
She slid across that bench seat smiling
With her favorite sweater on
We had two tickets and a little cash
And the whole night still to come
We'd pull into that drive-in entrance
And I'd start looking for a space
Not too close to that giant screen
Not too far from the snack bar place
Somewhere back behind the middle
Where the headlights wouldn't shine
I'd say, "I think this spot looks perfect"
She'd laugh and say, "You say that every time"
Oh, those drive-in kisses
Underneath that summer sky
A movie playing through a rusty speaker
And her sitting by my side
We'd watch the opening credits
Then forget what movie it was
There was nothing quite as sweet back then
As those drive-in kisses, young love
That old speaker hung outside my window
With a crackle in every line
Half the words came through like static
But we heard enough to get by
I'd run and get us popcorn
Two Cokes and something sweet
Come back and find her smiling
With her shoes kicked off her feet
That steering wheel was always trouble
When I tried to hold her tight
So we'd climb into the back seat
Where everything felt just right
That old bench seat was our kingdom
And she was my teenage queen
We had the finest seats in town
For a movie we barely seen
Oh, those drive-in kisses
Underneath that summer sky
A movie playing through a rusty speaker
And her sitting by my side
We'd watch the opening credits
Then forget what movie it was
There was nothing quite as sweet back then
As those drive-in kisses, young love
We kept a blanket in the trunk
For nights the weather felt just right
We'd spread it out beside the Chevy
And watch the stars between the lights
She'd lean her head against my shoulder
I'd put my arm around her waist
And every time I went to kiss her
She'd turn and meet me halfway
We didn't need a fancy restaurant
Or money we didn't have
Just a Friday night at the drive-in
And a girl who made me laugh
Oh, those drive-in kisses
I can still remember them
The smell of popcorn in the summer air
And her perfume on the wind
That rusty speaker on the window
That blanket folded in the trunk
And the back seat of that old Chevy
Where I first learned about love
Oh, those drive-in kisses
No matter how the years go by
I still remember looking for that spot
Beneath the drive-in sky
Last time I drove past that old place
There was nothing left to see
Just an empty lot and faded sign
Where our Friday nights used to be
But I could almost hear that speaker
And feel her hand in mine
Funny how a drive-in closes
But the kisses last a lifetime.
