Behind The Song
Beautiful Lonely Sunrise
Sixty years of waking up beside him
Coffee brewing just before the dawn
Two old chairs out on the back porch
Watching darkness slowly turn to gold
She couldn't count the mornings they had shared
Or all the colors painted in the sky
But she remembers how his hand felt
Wrapped around her fingers by his side
Some mornings they were barely speaking
Some mornings they were laughing till they cried
Some mornings brought a world of worries
Some mornings everything felt right
They'd watched the sun come up through heartache
Through raising kids and making ends meet
And even when they couldn't find the words
They'd sit together quietly
Now it's a beautiful lonely sunrise
The same old colors in the sky
The same two chairs upon the porch
But only one is occupied
The world keeps turning like it always did
The morning comes, the darkness dies
But nothing looks the same without him
In this beautiful lonely sunrise
She still gets up before the daylight
Still makes the coffee just the same
Sometimes she pours a second cup
Before she remembers things have changed
She keeps his favorite old blue sweater
Across the chair where he would sit
And when the first light touches heaven
She closes her eyes and talks to him
She tells him how the kids are doing
How the grandkids have grown tall
How she finally fixed that kitchen window
He'd been meaning to since fall
She tells him that she misses dancing
And how she misses being held
But most of all, she misses mornings
When she didn't face the dawn herself
Now it's a beautiful lonely sunrise
The same old colors in the sky
The same two chairs upon the porch
But only one is occupied
The world keeps turning like it always did
The morning comes, the darkness dies
But nothing looks the same without him
In this beautiful lonely sunrise
She wouldn't trade a single morning
Not the angry ones, not the sad
Not the times they sat in silence
Or the hardest days they had
'Cause every sunrise was a blessing
Even when they couldn't see
It wasn't always how the morning looked
It was who was there to see
And she knows somewhere beyond the clouds
He's waiting for her still
Where the morning never has to end
And time is standing still
So she'll watch her beautiful lonely sunrises
And let the morning fill her soul
She'll find a little peace in every color
And a little strength in growing old
She'll smile through tears and thank the heavens
For the love that made her life
And when her days down here are over
She'll leave these lonely dawns behind
There'll be a beautiful heavenly sunrise
And he'll be waiting by her side
Two souls together once again
Where love and morning never die
Until that day, she'll take her coffee
To the porch where love once grew
And watch another lonely sunrise
For the both of them, like she used to do
And whisper as the daylight finds her
"Good morning, sweetheart.
I still watch them with you."
